Oya: The Drunken God, Creator of the World
According to religious texts he was given the task to create the world by Olorun. That night he started the creation, but in his drunken state he made many mistakes. He is blamed for every human imperfection. On the last day of the year, the people will drink as much alcohol as possible and hopefully drink enough so that there isnt any left for Oya to drink. Maybe he can sober up and right the mistakes he made. If you die while drunk, there is a sacred ritual that takes place. Your body will be “folded” in such a way that the feet mets the head. The body will then be impaled with a special spear-like pole. The spear is impaled through the gouch, and it has canals running down the shaft. The blood is then collected in a bowl sitting around the spears base. The family members will then drink the blood. Finally the bowl is filled with hot coal and the body roasted so that the water in the body evaporates. No alcohol will arrive with the body for Oya to drink.
